Week 6/9
Posted on July 31st, 2024
Day 35 marks the end of embryogenesis (the first phase of gestation). The organs are now all beginning to form, and we now refer to the embryo as a foetus. During this foetal phase (and in particular from the 40th day onwards) the foetus' weight will increase by around 75%. This is where we start to see a pregnancy belly start to show, up until now, they are only at 25% of their delivery weight.
The variation in pup size starts now. The baby closest to the blood supply (in the horn) ends up with more food and becomes the strongest in the litter. It always seems like one horn/side delivers then the other. The babies get smaller, then a bigger pup marks the beginning of the second side. Want to see that photo again? Here you go!
Eyelids are complete and closed. They stay closed for the first 10-14 days after birth.
From day 42 the pace changes, as your bitch enters the third and final phase of gestation. The fetus is developing fast now. Claws will be developing, the skeleton begins to solidify, and the fetus will gain weight rapidly. The pups have gained 25% of their weight.
The dog’s belly will get bigger, and her teats will become a darker pink. She will need to rest more
Week six is the beginning of the third “trimester” for pregnant dogs. Frankie is already being fed a proper diet, and her mom is super in tune with her needs. When they hike, her Mom accounts for heat and hunger or just days she's not into it. Frankie may not feel like going for as long of a hike and in a few weeks that changes to strolls.
Pippi is about 3 weeks behind, than the Lord. Last time (their first litters) they were spaced 3 days apart. It was a lot of planning and spacing. Juggling to keep the girls away from each other and from each others pups. I'm talking about you Pip! Survival instincts run deep, and I daresay, more with this breed. So when Pip decided that Frankie's babies should die, it wasn't personal, it was pure instinct.
Pippi is headed into her 3rd week, if you'd like to see where she's at, take a look at this post
If Frankie is pregnant, she comes back in 24ish days
If Pippi is pregnant, she comes back in 41 ish days.
