Preparing to Have Pippi come
Posted on August 27th, 2024
I live in a small home. It fits me and my dogs and my stuff. On special days, it also fits expectant Mommas.
The nursery was designed when the house was being re-built. There is a closet with all the things I need. Scales, scissors, washable pee pads, blankets, pens, whelping pens. food, alcohol, baby collars. Clip boards with paperwork that will fill as the weeks go on. Thermometers and the form that tracks her temperature (measured twice a day) and gives me a heads up that it's delivery day. A lazy-boy for me to sleep on, when they start labor later in the day. Plug ins for heating pads, room for Momma to get away from here 24/7 duties. It's all in there. Ready.
Tomorrow I will go to the grocery store and pick up ingredients to make some food ahead. I've bottle fed too many pups to risk not having quick food in the freezer. Speaking of bottle feeding, I'll also stock up on those supplies. Check my bottles and nipples. Buy the ingredients I need for formua (yay for chickens producing eggs daily!). But, for today, I prepped the room. Which means a thourough sterilizing. I start with javex. Walls, floor, boxes. All get washed down. Then a basic cleaner (clinicide, the pink stuff the vets use on their tables). Then a spray I get from the vets that kills everything else. It's a big job. Empty the room, scrub it down, refill the room
There it is, all ready for Pippi and her wee company. Setting it up early, allows my dogs to get used to the room being off limits. It also allows the smells of disinfectants to dissipate.
Pippi will have food available 24/7 along with water. If I find she isn't eating much, I'll add some canned food. Their belly's are taken up with baby's and so they tend to eat smaller amounts. Her having a quiet space without my dogs hovering, wanting her food will allow her to relax. Relaxed Mom's have better deliveries and easier baby rearing. Hopefully I'll just be the support system, like last time.
43/57 days (according to date tied and how many days she went her first time)
